Yes, blue kitty FTW! The whole thing started by me looking for a random photo to blur into a background texture. It was a yellow and white daisy/mum flower, until I inverted the color.
I've found I quite like mouse-sketching so long as I do it in layers and use the 'smeary finger' tool on the lines. (It's 7:30 am, my brain can't think what it's actually called.)

I lucked out on the eyes after several tries, when instead of putting a highlight on top of them, I dragged in a bit of lighter color and let it do its own shading. That technique seems to give it more depth.
