I just found that out last night, myself. It's not really clear. FIRST you ask to join, and when you get permission to join, you go to the profile page and find the link to the sign-up page,
go to the sign-up page (it's members only) and comment with the name you intend you use, and your daily word committment IN THE SUBJECT LINE, as I've done in this comment.
Condensed version: the US based mods put up the daily post and when you've done your wordage for the day you comment to that post with the subject line of your comment as the example below Subject: Day 1, entropy_house, 325 words
Don't spell out any numbers, because it'll mess up their counting system. If you don't (for whatever reason, including LJ going down) comment before the next day's post goes up, then you've missed a day. You don't lose your wordage for the day, though. You just add any missing days word count to the word count of the first day you can comment.
