Some sites I read a while back about the domestication of cats (who apparently domesticated themselves) said they had changed from animals that wouldn't willingly share territory to animals that could live in relative harmony in groups so long as they had the necessities of life. And from being willing to tolerate other cats, some of them seem to grow to have friendships with a few.
