I guess the doc was referring to the inner workings that he looked at with his bright light thingie. Anytime I can't find something, I assume the gremlins have hidden it.

I read the review & think the reviewer was suffering from too much knowledge(having been familiar with the book & having no doubt at least a synopsis of the film) in the early parts which enchanted me *because* I didn't know what was happening and had the pleasure of figuring it out. The last half is 'faster' because things are connecting and pushing for resolution, but the slower pace of the earlier half is necessary to let you feel that the situation Hugo finds himself in has lasted for a very long time, to make it routine for him.

I didn't see the three-D version, which was just as well, cuz there are some scenes that are startling ENOUGH without adding that! :^)
