Google amazes even me
Jul. 23rd, 2009 04:20 pmI started to reread an old (August 1970, browning crisply paperback) book today whilst trying to nap (pool guy never showed, but since I'd called him around 10am to mention a couple flaws/problems I just noticed I found out early enough to save myself much wasted stress-energy). In the introduction to A.E.Van Vogt's, 'Science Fiction Monsters' a lovely collection of short stories, Forrest J. Ackerman mentions in passing several books that he felt cried out to be written. And he said 'Tarzan on Mars' HAD been written, and might even be published if the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs gave permission.
I thought this was not only a cool idea, combining 2 of the universes Burroughs had created, but it would be something someone on my flist might love. So I googled 'Tarzan on Mars' & the first hit was to a detailed review by someone who'd searched for it for many years after reading the same introduction in the same book. Serendipitously, a friend of his came across a photostated copy of the story in a library and taking advantage of the librarian's indisposition in the toilet, photocopied it and sent it to him.
It turned out to be an unauthorized fanfic, not very good, which the writer hoped to get permission to publish. The reviewer thinks it was just as well it was never published, but he has illustrated his remarks with panels from a comic strip where it sure looks like Tarzan wound up on Burroughs' Mars.
Now I wonder where the comic strip can be found...
