Hammer drill, yellow-handled racheting screwdriver (I should get a better one- it works, but it's not easy) and a few screws put in.
At least twice as many screws as the Home Depot guy thought I'd need. I so do not want to have to do this AGAIN.
Joint compound. Despite the boasting name, this isn't very good stuff. You want JointCompound that says 'One Step' or 'Fast and Final' or 'Non-Shrinking, Non-Cracking'.
One layer of joint compound applied
Next day a second layer of joint compound applied
Day after that, preparing to paint the patch.
My idea worked! I'd put a layer of aluminum foil onto the remaining paint months ago, carefully pressing it down to exclude air before putting the lid back on the paint can. The paint had no skin, no thickening at all, and took very little time to stir evenly.
Wet paint!
