Hah, AT&T guy came and his testing gadget that *never* fails was dead. He got another and tested both phones and all four jacks (all good) and then went back out to the box and is NOW thinking it is in the system. He whacked at the line with one of my pool poles to try to get a signal variance, and then said the readings were way too much voltage and he was going to drive up to the main box (wherever- WHAT do you want to bet it's the same one I saw the guy on Sept 22??) and fix whatever there, and if THAT doesn't do it, he's going somewhere else to fix stuff before returning to Ehouse.

The excitement never ends.

(Note: The fact that when he called me on my AT&T cell phone and he COULD NOT hear me from 6 blocks away should have been a tiny HINT that the problem is in the system.)

EDIT: It's more than 2 hours later that my post- this is what happened during that time... he came back, went up the utility pole behind my house (the one WAY overdue for them moving/refurbishing lines) & discovered that they had me hooked up through a SPLICER, not the metal box which PROVIDES extra protection (no wonder my last phone FRIED). I remembered them doing that and me saying, 'that doesn't look right' but the metal box was so worn out the phone had failed four times over the years and each time they'd moved my line one by one over until ALL four of the available connections were dead, whereupon they ignored the standard procedure of REPLACING the metal box. and simply spaghetti wired it DIRECTLY into the crapola splice covered by a hunk of heavy plastic tube. He tried for a long time to find two good wires in the spaghetti so he could at least give me temporarily reliable service, but finally admitted defeat. He says I'm at the end of the line (typical) (me and the neighbor whose phone went crap the same time as mine, only she doesn't fight FIGHT FIGHT (to be fair, her husbands in the hospital with foot operation). So he's going to try to hook me back up the way it was before which MIGHT give me interrmittent service & the line guys are to come to my house tomorrow morning.

I repeatedly asked him to make sure they KNOW the metal box should be replaced & me NOT be hooked up to a 'temporary' for another 5 years or so.

He also admitted that I was RIGHT, SO VERY VERY RIGHT when I told AT&T from the 22nd of Sept that it was a line problem but they WOULD NOT check the line. (Now I really know how Rodney McKay feels- SO VERY VERY RIGHT.)

So MAYBE it will be fixed tomorrow. Maybe. AM NOT BETTING on it.

I currently have a dial tone. Don't care. Am not calling anyone now. FLUMPH.

Reminds of Avon and Dayna.
When she asks if he's tired of always being right!
Hopefully they'll finally fix it!

If they don't fix it tomorrow I guess it's time to hunt for a phone number for AT&T corp. HQ. *sheesh* And HOPE the cell phone works, because the house phone's gone dead again. AT&T guy said it must be a short in the line-- but where? No one knows.
