The Princess and the Pee

AKA: Pissed On and Pissed Off
I got up after a pleasant night's sleep with 'Tasha purring on me. Started doing various things, went back to pull my bed together. I'm a bit the opposite of the Princess who slept on a dozen mattresses and felt the pea under the bottom. To sleep well I need the pressure of either a weighted blanket (which I haven't got) or a bunch of quilts (which I have made over the years, so they're ratty and thin individually but add up to just enough weight).
Well... the pee wasn't under them. It was definitely on at least 3 of the 6 or 7 of them (the number varies depending on your definition of 'quilt vs rags held together by long association'). I'm gonna be spending the rest of the day washing quilts- the definitely peed ones I'm gonna wash twice, with a cup of baking soda each time.
Thank heaven I've been putting the baby quilt I'm making over the sewing machine whenever I'm not actively working on it, so it was nowhere near the scene of the crime. I'll still have to wash it once I'm done because now I think 'quilt=cat pee' & I'll have to wash it to set my mind at ease.
I suspect (and hope) that 'Tasha did it because her box wasn't April Fresh. I took it out and scrubbed it thoroughly before refilling it.
Have to wash my hands THREE times, with soap and dishwashing liquid and even 'Fantastic household cleaner' after every time I touch the quilts (anywhere on the quilts) before I can't smell it one me. Cat pee is the meanest pee there is, my maternal grandma vowed.

Date: 2016-04-02 07:30 pm (UTC)You know those stainless steel soapstones that are meant to get rid of odours? Well they do actually work to get rid of cat pee - when washed with whatever soap you normally use. I used to think they were a bit of a con but when my local Charity shop (thrift store to you) had them on offer, I thought why not. The other advantage is they can be rinsed with boiling water too.
It still doesn't make cleaning up after them any less horrible, but at least it gets rid of the pee stink.

Date: 2016-04-02 07:35 pm (UTC)EDIT: I found them under steel soap bar but from all the reviews, it sounds like rubbing my hands with anything made of stainless steel while washing with soap & water would do the same trick. Shall try that next time my hands are stinky. Don't see any way it could help with laundry though cuz I can't bring myself to hand rub entire quilts! ;^) Maybe I'll go to the thrift store and get a big old stainless steel ladle & see if that works.
I'm now on the third washing cycle of the two small quilts that were obviously peed. They didn't smell bad after the second wash, but they didn't smell fresh, either.
It's definitely going to take me all day to do the bedding- I probably won't get around to washing my clothes, which was what I'd planned for today.

Date: 2016-04-03 04:09 am (UTC)They're all old, and worn thin, so I THINK three rounds of washing have got them clean. I'm down to the last one in the drier now.
Will have to go buy more laundry detergent soon. I used up a lot.
