Last night, Z's emails to me, and mine to her, were so delayed we never got to talk (2 hours from sending at a minimum, most of them only showed up this morning) so here's an emergency post where we can at least say HI!

by copperbadge began last April, but boy, howdy, these days I really so wish it were true. Heck, I'd even rather have DUM-E as president.

Summary:
Clint Barton's presidential campaign started as a joke. It didn't end that way, except for Steve.

"Leader of the free world" is an oxymoron. We're free and whoever runs the US doesn't lead us (thank God). Just saying.

I expect no one with any sense uses that phrase seriously. I got curious about the origin & tried to find out the original context- the closest I got was in September of 1949 in reference to the US under Truman.

As a result of these efforts, policy papers have now been prepared for submission to the National Security Council and the President, probably shortly after Truman’s return from Key West. And it can be confidently reported that all the studies have pointed in the same direction—a much greater effort in all fields is required if the United States is not to fail in its role of leader of the free world.

So my guess is that it meant the US was supposed to be leading the free world (IE countries with democratic governments) in recovering from WWII, a role that was arrogant, but at least had some justification, with financial aid to various countries and a strong voice in international discussions.

It later got transferred to meaning the president of the US, mainly I think because it appealed to newspaper editors, but I don't recall anyone taking the meaning literally.

Pretty sure Copperbadge was using it ironically at the very least.

I think a lot of Americans use it literally. It's always pissed me off, but especially now when it refers to Shitler as I call that orange creature. It's also not the most powerful man in the world as a friend on FB called it. The US maybe, though I'd hope Congress and Senate put some brakes on all its insane excesses.

There are idiots in every part of the world. I just don't know why they're in charge in the US.

I've got my fingers crossed that this is a very short-lived presidency. That man isn't fit for any office. Dog catcher would be too much responsibility for him.

I have to say: where are all the American gun nutters when you need one?

They LIKE him! A quick google for 'NRA for Trump' is scary as hell- the National Rifle Association spent more than 14 million backing him and making ads to smear Clinton, and he's all YAY, GUNS!

So I expect he'll be cheerfully making it easier for all the gunners to stock up on whatever they want. Bazooka hunting in the national parks, grenade launcher fishing in publicly owned lands, machine gun duck hunting, self defense with Uzis.

I just want to lock my door and order crackers over the internet and never come out.

Let's hope for impeachment, then. They're building up to one.

I sure hope so. I think they have grounds for it in so many ways.
