EDIT:

The explanation of the horrible image on the news post- it's DELIBERATE. They wanted to make it look like Frank was a knife-wielding murderer. http://frank.livejournal.com/12180.html

I looked in Frank's journal- inactive since July 29, 2009, then they started it up again April 11, 2017. The first post was a pic of the new Frank under a dust sheet. The next was his full image in four hooved stance. The next was the 3 panel Frank cake murderer. I think I will refer to New Frank in future as Frank-enstein's monster.

The original FRANK is still here! They probably forgot it exists.

Over the years, LJ has used a lot of different images for their mascot, Frank the goat. The first one I recall was a black & white photo of a hornless live white goat. I was fine with that one.

I think the next was a cartoon, done in realistic style, of a light gray goat with good size backwards curling horns. I quite liked him. About that time we were told he liked to eat pants (no, I found that his journal was originally unofficial, and the users set up the idea of pants-eating, wire-chewing, code developing, etc. They created all the best parts of the Frank idea, and later generously allowed LJ to take over the journal so aren't responsible for what Frank morphed into when controlled by other people. One of the two creator's journals is now struck out.). He sometimes was slightly animated with a chewing mouth, and on a few occasions had other things added, like a red hero cape. And for 'page not found' there was an image of him sitting on a toilet reading a newspaper and looking startled. I believe that was around the time site problems were referred to as Frank 'chewing the wires'.

Then there were two cartoon strip versions of a gray Frank, drawn by two different artists, judging by the styles. The baby versions with nub horns were particularly cute while the adult versions were more 'edgy' but still remotely realistic and obviously represented a goat.

Possibly around that time there was an informal 'toy Frank' contest, because I found photos and directions for making two of them.

And this is a knitting pattern which makes a cute Frank.

I found the next Frank disturbing and ugly. Semi-realistically drawn head and shoulder white goat, with bulging yellow eyes and moderate back curving horns. There were versions with the lower eyelids raised and tears (down for maintenance), versions of him chewing a handful of colored wires, a version with one eye squinted shut and tongue out (access denied).

The newest Frank has a two tone gray terrier shape head (a goat's beard is not at the end, but back before the chin) with a pink dog like nose, one and a half antelope-type horns, two eyes on the same side of the face, and a fluffy bunny tail.

Borrowing the phrase from British-speaking friends... I think this Frank is pants.

Interestingly enough- there is a breed of Russian goat which would make a fine Frank. The Improved Russian white goat is a handsome animal.
