Bias Tape Making Station
Jul. 12th, 2020 02:10 pmIn my stash of maybe I'll use it I found a big roll of bias cut fabric I'd picked up years ago at the thrift shop and decided to make face mask ties from it.
The ironing board is covered with an old nightgown just in case the cat decides to sit on it to look out of the window.
The blue/black thing is a jig made by 3-D printer (and kindly sent to me totally free) by a fellow volunteer at the MaskMakers community (since closed as demand dropped off).
I fed the bias through the jig to fold it, then ironed and led it over on top of a stack of masks (made from fabric proofs I had to buy in order to set designs for sale, and just kept for years thinking someday I'd find a use for them) in progress to the platform I'd made of salvaged styrofoam held together by USPS priority mail tape (at one time you could request this over the internet and they'd give it to you for free-- you do see the central theme here--- CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP I am--) and then to my old Necchi, which only has a few minor issues-- like not being able to back stitch... I work around that...
Anyway, this is an old pic. I've got another batch I'm currently working on, but I think when that's done I'll go to obsess over something else.
(also, the thing supporting the mini ironing board was a computer table from way back when the Mac Plus sat on top of shelf that went on top of this, and the keyboard fit below. I find it hard to throw anything out... the sewing machine table is... I don't know how old... probably 1940's was my grandmothers. My father bodged in a hinged piece of plywood so a modern sewing machine could fit. Heck, my sewing hassock chair belonged to my mother- it fell apart a couple years ago and I discovered that while most of it was made of wood, the sides were pressed cardboard- I had wood saved from house repairs a few years ago and when I saw new sewing room hassocks were selling for $$$$$ I decided to learn half-assed carpentry, and made new sides for it. Covered with tapestry fabric bought on a whim on sale in JoAnns decades ago-- it works. This is the house of so much experimental design...)

Date: 2020-07-12 07:58 pm (UTC)I love the masks! My daughter immediately grabbed the one that's purple on one side, rainbow on the other, saying "the gay one is mine". She LOVES it & has received many compliments.
I usually wear the one that's dense floral on one side, with tree frogs on the other. The person who's usually at my CSA when I pick up says she's always happy to see me because I'm usually wearing it frog-side-out, and she just LOVES the pattern.
The third mask isn't quite as popular, because the horse pattern (which everyone likes) is upside down.
I'm realizing that we're going to be wearing masks for the rest of 2020 AT LEAST. What fabrics do you have in stock? My family would LOVE to pay you for more masks if we can pick the fabric.

Date: 2020-07-12 08:10 pm (UTC)All of the masks are one of a kind, since I'm using up my old proof swatches (two to a mask). Until the city finishes the work they're doing on the road in front of my house I can't count on being able to get or send mail, but when I get through with the current batch I could post group photos so at least you could see them. This bunch is pretty much all floral on one side, and patchwork look on the other.
