Good day, yay.
Jul. 20th, 2020 03:54 pmOk, it's now 4pm. I woke up early and started my day by filling out my mail in ballot for local election after perusing all the electioneering that was sent to me, and remembering the incompetence of the incumbent. Put it in the mailbox, put up my sign 'Please Pick up Mail'.
Did all my usual 'chores'- pleased to discover my third batch of 'cat grass- barley, wheat and rye' is sprouting faster than the other two- this time I dug up a bit of very poor, sandy soil, figuring it would be easier for sprouts. I let 'Tasha munch on the others and then transplanted the chewed up remains into the tiny niches in Bernard statue- who knows, if any of it lives long enough to seed, sparrows would be pleased.
Got my groceries via Instacart yesterday so today I was able to treat myself to a sliced banana on buttered gluten free toast for breakfast. YAY.
Sat down at the computer and googled Russian men's facial hair, and other REALLY IMPORTANT research for a fic I'm trying to add to (with no idea where it's going). Tony Stark newly turned werewolf and Scott McCall, True Alpha werewolf, in Siberia... um.... you had to be there for it to make sense? And now they're in a diamond mining town eating cheeseburgers... any day where you can say that sentence is a good one.
It rained early here and then turned into a nice day, less scorching than usual. So I took my extensible pole saw out to hack some more on the orchid tree- I've been cutting it back further than usual for hurricane season, and two of the plants nearby are very happy to be getting some sun. So far I have now got to eat at least SIX RIPE FIGS (never more than one at a time), and the volunteer lantana nearby is full of blossoms and attracting more butterflies than ever.
Today, in addition to the Zebra Longwing, Julia Heliconia and Gulf Fritillary butterflies (I see them nearly every day), I had a GIANT Swallowtail, a Cloudless Sulphur, AND AND AND. a RUDDY DAGGERWING!!
Yay! It wasn't in perfect condition, but it was in much better shape than the only other 2 I've ever seen. It did still have the 'dagger' tip on one hind wing, and it was a beautiful Siberian tiger orange with dark stripes. YAY.
A few days ago I had ordered chemicals for the pool, and had a conversation with Live Chat wherein among other things I pointed out that the discount code given in the email wouldn't work on the already discounted items I bought but it SAID 'discounted on all DEALS' and I gently pointed out that wording does sound like it meant in addition to any price reductions on the site and she took my case to someone higher up & told me they'd give me the discount.
FedEx sent me a text yesterday to expect delivery today- so I put out 2 signs- one on the gate FED EX I am HOME, I do not have a car, but I am HOME- and one on the front door FED EX PLEASE SIGN FOR ME. PLEASE DO NOT BLOCK DOOR.
City workers came by to be ripping and digging and shoveling, Ladders and excavators and pipes, OH MY. I asked one of them PLEASE, If the FED EX truck comes, make sure it can get to me.
In between sawing and bundling up branches to put in the back yard to add to the Rainbow Lizard habitat, I rested up in the house, and missed the FED EX. Two boxes on the front porch. Opened them up and there was a LOT more of the one chemical than I ordered- thinking it over, maybe the company decided they couldn't refund me the difference, so they'd make it up with product. Which, OK, I have room to store it, it doesn't go bad and I will use it.
I knew the second chemical was sent separately, so I wasn't expecting it today, and carried on hauling branches to the back yard. Went back out front for more and there was ANOTHER box, but this time it was HALF of what I'd ordered (only 1 of the 2 of the other chemical) and I was???
So I opened the packaging to be sure it was the right thing and loaded it onto my cart to haul into the other room for storage later (50 pound dry shock, not something I can throw under my arm and juggle) then came in and searched my email for the tracking numbers... it looks like they sent the two of the same thing separate from each other, so SHOULD be arriving tomorrow.
WHEW.
Am very tired and it's only 4pm. Maybe I will have a swim before putting chemical in the pool. Maybe I will just float, and let the water do the work.
So many more things I wanted to do today, but... hey, swimming counts as a thing....

Date: 2020-07-21 03:16 pm (UTC)I did take some photos, but haven't got around to doing anything with them, don't know when I'll get them off the camera. I THINK I probably have at least a couple good snaps of each kind of butterfly. Hard to tell on the camera view.
I REALLY need to mow again, the varied assortment of weeds that make up my yard are getting into flowering. Must get up the energy to do that, maybe tomorrow- hoping I get the last FedEx delivery today- the road is *barely* passable, and I've spoken to one of the road workers today asking him to please make sure the FedEx delivery person doesn't give up. :^)
I have so much weeds, so much... some of them I have decided to appreciate because they grow where everything else dies and anything's better than bare dirt. But not CRAB GRASS. Crab grass I try to pull up at every opportunity.
Given half a chance, lantana will grow HUGE here. I really am still annoyed whenever I look at the dead stalks remaining of what had been a seven foot tall lantana constantly covered in blooms. I read that you can keep lantana indoors over the winter-- but then I also read that you CAN'T, so I guess some places it works, depending on the temperature and light.
DRAT those SLUGS. I don't know if you can get it, but there's something called 'Sluggo' which kills slugs and ONLY slugs. It is iron-based and actually acts as plant food. It stops the slugs from eating, so even before they die they can't harm your plants once they eat some of it.
Tony is a city werewolf, he's hoping to get out of Siberia, he already ate a raw rabbit- YUCK- and fought a polar bear. :^) He just wants to get wifi and talk to Pepper. :^)
