American cocker spaniel puppies
Sep. 6th, 2020 04:20 pmI've gone back to look at the list of favorite dog breeds you guys gave me for inspiration in May. Some are breeds I already have drawn & have on my Spoonflower shop.
This is the collated list:
Akita, Corgi, Labrador, Golden Retriever, Pekinese, German Shepherd, Scotties, Jack Russell, Cocker Spaniel, Pug, King Charles Spaniel, Springer Spaniel, Dalmatian, English bulldog, cockapoo, husky, English setter and chihuahua, papillon, long- haired chihuahua.
These are the breeds I already had enough to give their own collections:
Corgi, Labrador, Golden Retriever,German Shepherd, Scotties, Dalmatian, English bulldog, golden retriever and chihuahua
I've since added an Akita, a Pekinese, a Jack Russell and a Pug. Leaving the King Charles Spaniel, Springer Spaniel, cockapoo, husky, English setter, and papillon undrawn from the list.
Today I wanted to draw a cocker spaniel, but I know there's more than one kind. The American cocker spaniel is just called 'cocker spaniel' in the US, and English cocker spaniel is just called 'cocker spaniel' everywhere not in the US. (Plus there's working breed varieties, but I'm not getting into THAT distinction as well.)
So, I spent hours trying to find photos that didn't just say 'cocker spaniel' so I could analyze the differences, and then I wound up on this website with American cocker spaniel puppies. EEEE! I seldom draw puppies, but I love to look at them. SO CUTE.

(Mostly the obvious difference is that the American cocker spaniel has a shorter muzzle, and more domed head, giving it a more distinct 'stop', also it's proportionally shorter, a bit longer, and has longer coat on the body and legs (how much of this is genetics & how much is grooming, I don't know, but for drawing purposes, it doesn't matter).
Not sure about tail length, think both varieties dock the tail for show standards, but do the standards differ? HMMm....
