Possible origin of Uncle Ben??
Dec. 23rd, 2020 08:41 pmI've just watched the first Hopalong Cassidy movie in which a character named Uncle Ben, described as being like a father to Cassidy, was murdered, which started Cassidy after his murderer.
Stan Lee would have been 13 when the movie was in theaters in 1935... so... possibly it stuck in his subconscious & in 1962 he used it without even remembering why. It was a very moving death scene. Ben crawled over the sagebrush, weakly calling Cassidy's name, and when Cassidy found him, he discovered Ben had written a clue in the sand to the killer's hideout (and also had in his hand a shell casing from the killer's gun.) I like that there's at least a little detective plot in all of these movies, so far.
In the Cassidy movies being killed doesn't necessarily mean the actor won't be playing a similar role in the next one. So far they've killed 'Red' and used him again, with the same character name, even. 'Uncle Ben' was also 'Windy' and was in a lot of the movies, so, like Marvel, being killed isn't necessarily permanent. :^)

And LOTS and LOTS of horses.
Even though they're short movies- running around 70 minutes- they all had some plot, generally involving Hopalong doing some detective work and logic to figure out the bad guy.
I also like that Hoppy is generally the shortest man in the scenes, and still gets the most respect. ;^)
