*cough* $14,000 *cough*

The first pool guy showed up & gave me an off-the-cuff guestimate... eeee... I told him I was considering getting a couple truckloads of dirt and making it a vegetable garden.

Veggies are good. And dirt is low-maintenance, although harder to swim in than water. *g*

If you're going to do this, remember to break up the concrete bottom of the pool first.

Nah, I'm not going to do it. Veggie garden would be more maintenance than a pool, and with water restrictions & drought, it'd never be worth it. :^)

Also, a veggie garden won't add to the selling price of the house, but a functional swimming pool *will*.

Hopefully the others will have a better quote.

I suspect the best one won't be much less- the pool needs a LOT of work. There isn't really *anything* right about it.

How much would the earth cost?

I suppose a pool adds some value to the house, but maybe a vege garden would too. People might be more interested in growing their own food now.

I've no idea what getting it filled with topsoil would cost-- probably quite a bit-- for one thing, the soil would have to be hauled by wheelbarrow loads from the front yard to the back.

The pool guy thought a pool (especially a much larger than average size one like mine) adds $100,000 in value to the house, but then he would say that, wouldn't he?

The people in Hialeah are not veggie-growers. They're big on cementing front yards for parking and using the back yard for parties.

I'd ask a real estate agent how much value a working pool adds.

Good idea. I'll hunt some up tomorrow & see what they say.

Ouch! Pools seem expensive, no matter what stage of use they are.

Pools are expensive, yes. If I didn't already have it, I sure wouldn't put one in.

I want a chlorine generator (at least $1000 in itself, not counting installation) so at least I won't have to deal with liquid chlorine (messy, awkward to use, difficult to balance with acid, etc., fumes wreck clothes & shoes, expensive to have delivered or to taxi to get [& I bet a taxi would be unwilling to carry it in his trunk].)

When I move maybe I'll get a membership in some exercise place that has a swimming pool & which I can use public transport to reach.
