I've been up all night with an earache. Finally I gave up and took a hot bath (not probably medically advisable, but I was desperate) and a couple acetominophen which eased the pain enough so I could think. Walgreens has a health clinic not far from me, open at 8am. I'll give them a try, earache is within their repertoire. I think it's an infection since the jaw joint is also sore & tender --oooh, it makes crackly noises when I prod it. *makes notes for hypothetical story in which Avon has an earache.

5:45am... am going to lie down with paper towels wrapped around my damp hair & try for some zzz.

Drat. I had plans for the day which are probably shot down in flames now.

EDIT: It's 8:30 and I'm almost dressed & finishing breakfast (banana and a cup of tea). I woke up around 8:10, pleasantly surprised that I'd dozed off. I woke up with a sudden memory of the discount prescription card I downloaded & printed recently. I'll take that- maybe I'll need a prescription.

My throat is slightly sore...mmm... maybe I'd better try to push myself to get to the Postal Orifice too, at least. (The rate goes up early next month but if I buy the 'Forever Stamps' now they will continue to send a first class letter at the current price.)

I do not have time for a cold. Shall eat lots of vitamin C and echinecea later.

EDIT: 8:42 I got myself all pulled together & called the taxi- he'll be here in about half an hour. Gives me time to try to do my morning chores & check on my cement cat.

EDIT 2: 1:32pm I"m home. The Walgreens clinic was quite good- there was only one patient ahead of me so only a 15 minute wait. The nurse practioner took a medical history (I remembered to tell her I'm allergic to aspirin), took my bp, looked in both ears and my throat, felt the glands in my neck, listened to my heart, said my bp is in the prehypertensive range (eh, I have white coat hypertension) and said if I could lose weight that would help (hey, she's gotta wsay it or be unprofessional) and invited me to a free cholesterol screening on May 5.

$59 for the exam, and because I had the discount card it was about $30 for both meds. (That printout saved me $18.25 today)

Turned out I needed 2 medications because I have both middle and external ear infection- she had to keep trying for a while to find something without an aspirin component (their computer is nice- it looks at my medical history and compares with the prescription and says 'NO' when part of the medication contained an aspirin derivative)). I've got antibiotic tablets 3X a day for 10 days, and a combination antibiotic/cortisone drops 3 drops 3 times a day in the left ear. I am typing with my head held sideways, keeping the medicine in. I'm not allowed to get the ear wet, of course, but also not even to use an ear plug to keep medicine in or water out. It's quite swollen and sore inside so I didn't really want to, anyway

I went to the Postal Orifice next. The wait was a LOT longer there, but I stuck it out and got 100 of the Forever Stamps. Then I went to Big Lots a couple doors down and SPLURGED on fancy yarns, 'fun fur/boa/chenille' types (they crochet up into cute animals, or knit into pretty scarves even in plain stockinette) and a shower curtain/liner and some lovely soft microfiber cleaning pads (I *resisted* potting soil- just too much to haul around today). Then I walked across the parking lot to Office Max and splurged on artgum erasers/drawing pencils/bead filled wrist rest/antibacterial mouse pad (my gel mouse pad's been hurting my hand)/computer 'glove' (fingerless palm/wrist support, ambidextrous) and rubber cement (for putting the soles on boots for teddy bears & also repairing old paperbacks).

Then I called the taxidriver who said he'd be 15-20 minutes, so I walked a bit further and went to Subway intending just to get a non-carbonated drink because my throat was sore, but when I was waiting to pay for the bottle of iced tea I saw that they'll make Salads, so I got a very plain chicken salad with oil & vinegar (I figure it'll only be a tiny bit contaminated by gluten as they use the same knives/choppers on everything including the bread, but I was soo hungry I figured it was worth the fractional risk.

The taxidriver mentioned again how his daughter enjoyed the two books I'd given him for her (Pollyanna, and Because of Winn-Dixie). Yesterday, I picked up the Lemony Snickett 'Unfortunate' books at the thrift store (Volumes 1-6, don't know if there are more. I figure if I read them and don't want to read them again, she might like them.)

Well, I've sat here with my ear sideways for half an hour that should be enough for the drops. Ear is still ouchy, but I have permission to take extra-strength acetaminophen up to 4X a day if needed... I think I'll take a couple now, and finish my salad & ice tea & have a bit of a lie-down.

Deepest sympathy, I know what you are going through. Actually a hot bath isn't too bad a thing for earache, the steam loosens any gunge in your sinuses and allows it to drain down your Eustachian tube more easily and that also allows any infection to drain out of the ear also. Try inhaling eucalyptus oil in boiling water, I've found that works quite well for me.

I forgot to get eucalyptus oil. I'm working on 2 hours sleep. :^) I think I have some witch hazel & other stuff that might work well in boiling water.

Hah! I just looked in my medicine chest- I had gone through and chucked tons of old stuff, but I have a bottle (at least 50 years old, probably 60) of Oil of Eucalyptus. I kept it because the old-fashioned bottle was cool & I figured it couldn't go bad. Not as if I was going to swallow it.

Shall boil up a cup of water.

Something tangy and penetrating, pepermint oil might work, I have a bottle of Menthol and Eucalyptus oil tha works wonders. And if all else fails just steam from boiling water would help.

*nods* I put a half teaspoonful into a metal cup, then poured boiling water over and put a small plastic bag over it. I stick my snout in and have a few snorts, and then back up to let my eyes uncross. :^)

I also tilted my head over it to let the warm steam get in my ear. Feels good.

Yes that's another thing that i do when the earach e is very bad, I have a grain bag that I warm up in the microwave to just above blood heat and hold that to my ear. What did the clinic say about it?

From: [identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com
They didn't mention heat, but I'm sure I could do a rice sock in the microwave.

I have hope that since I so rarely take any kind of medication that I'll respond quickly to this. My germs are probably naive and easily intimidated. :^)

As soon as the acetaminophen I've just taken kills the ouch, I"m going to have a nice lie-down. Probably Thomas will curl up next to me and purr, he's good at that.

However, having seen Mr. Gross shirtless in a few things & discovered that he is (either by nature or design) smooth (not furry chested), my interest in seeing a lot more of him is dampened, so to speak. So, while I enjoy the act, the final result is generally anti-climactic.

I prefer a bit of fur, too, but on the other hand-- if he's smooth, you can get a paintbrush with chocolate paint and have a lot of fun on that warm skin canvas... so many beautiful men, so little time...

Ya know...

I was considering listing a few traditionally furless areas where painting is still a pleasure, but if you already have the paintbrush, I doubt you need the list. ;-)

Ouch! I haven't had earache since I was a kid, and they were so bad I used to cry. You should use this as an excuse to have a rest and do things you enjoy.

I'm definitely putting off calling the electrician and pool guy. It *hurts* to talk and to listen on the phone. At one point my throat seized up very ouchy while I was out.

I'll read the books I got from the thrift store & maybe watch more B7 DVDs and I would really like to finish my statue, but only if I feel up to it. My bareroot strawberry plants arrived a few hours ago and I planted them. :^)

I've made myself a pot of chicken soup from scratch and hope that will help. I've still got my sense of taste, so I'm enjoying it.

Ouch indeed!
It's bad to have both middle and outer ear infections. I've had them on and off since I was a baby. Even toothache isn't as bad.
I find the heat pad trick does work.

If you can't plug the ear at all it's going to make hair washing tricky!

Date: 2009-04-25 12:50 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com
I'm thinking that maybe the hair can stay dirty (I can run a damp brush through it if necessary). I washed it this morning at 5am when I took the desperation bath.

My jaw is much less sore, so I am hoping I will respond with superhuman speed to the antibiotics. (I seldom take medication, so my germs may be easily impressed, I hope.)

With any luck the ear will respond to meds quite quickly. Ouch - it doesn't sound pleasant at all. Still, you've found a silver lining, making notes for future B7 stories.
Take the day offf, relax, read, and hopefully you'll feel incrementally better as the days progress.

True, kitties (and plants!) cannot fend for themselves - until such time as they work out the intricacy of the can opener, anyway. That's only one step away from world domination.

Oh my god, massive hugs to you, and you sound very brave, but I know from experience that ear infections are sent by the devil. Do you get the feeling a demon is stabbing you in the ear with an invisible knitting needle? Argh!

I got one while in Spain and had to miss my flights home (luckily I'd taken out a £9 insurance policy and had a hotel, money for food and private treatment!) 'cos you can't fly if your ear will blow up...

Get well soon!

Date: 2009-04-25 04:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com
The feeling I have is that the devil has sat his fat arse on my ear and is trying to make it explode from constant pressure. I'm not even sure the eardrops can get in.

I flew once with a bad ear-- I didn't know it until we were up in the air, and it was bad enough on the plane, but when we landed I was in agony. Which no one had any sympathy for. *ptth* This wasn't ANYWHERE near that. This is just ...not fun... so far the acetaminophen brings the pain down enough for me to sleep, which is the main thing. So long as you can sleep nothing is too bad.
