Eye say, eye say...

I went to the eye guy today & everything's very good. He seemed to think my eyes are very healthy for a person of my age. EEEE! Yeah, you gotta tell them your age. OMG, on the 7th of next month I'll be at the speed limit- able to get the Senior Citizen discount at the thrift shop. EEEEE!! So, back to my dr. visit. He said there's no way of correcting either eye with a single lens so I can see a) handwork b) sewing machine and c) computer distances clearly. So, eh, my left eye's good for closeup & sewing machine, I ordered eyeglasses for the computer. I'm having them mail the glasses to me.
As long as I'd had the taxi ride to the eye place I figured I'd go to the movies (a 2 minute walk across the parking lot) afterward (have my old distance eyeglasses which are only useful in the movies) & see whatever was starting not long after I got out of the dr.'s office. Turned out the only thing starting in half an hour when I got to the box office was 'Hugo'. I had no idea what it was, neither did the ticket seller, but with a PG rating I thought I might like it & if not, I'd just go catch part of another movie.
It's wonderful. I recommend it highly. And going in without knowing ANYTHING about it made it even better, as it's sort of a mystery that slowly develops, explaining how the hero wound up in the unusual circumstances in which we meet him. And he is a lovely hero, angsty and brave and clever and persistent and with the most marvellous blue, blue eyes. There's also some humor, and some great chase scenes and some great dog actors and... oooh... not to give anything away, it's just a great flick.
And since it just opened I had the theater to MYSELF. I expect it's gonna be CROWDED as soon as word gets out.

Date: 2011-11-24 01:22 pm (UTC)I've just read a pretty favourable review of Hugo in today's Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2011/nov/23/hugo-martin-scorsese-film-review?INTCMP=SRCH).

The last half is 'faster' because things are connecting and pushing for resolution, but the slower pace of the earlier half is necessary to let you feel that the situation Hugo finds himself in has lasted for a very long time, to make it routine for him.
I didn't see the three-D version, which was just as well, cuz there are some scenes that are startling ENOUGH without adding that! :^)

He still liked the film! Four stars is very good!

Date: 2011-11-24 04:37 pm (UTC)Mostly what misplaces items is me wandering around with things in my hand as I do stuff from room to room. This is why I have multiples of common necessary things like hairbrushes and cat food scoops, so I can give up hunting and wait for them to turn up by accident.
I would have given it FIVE stars. ;^) On top of everything else, the plot strongly revolved around a couple historical/magical things I'd googled & admired, so it was a YAY! LOOK! They MADE A NEW *spoiler*! I'd always wanted to see that work! And they adapted the *spoiler*! HOW COOL.

Date: 2011-11-24 03:57 pm (UTC)I'm sure this will be available on DVD. Not as awesome as the big screen, but I'm gonna get it when I can.
