Stayed awake long enough for the electrician to call & say he couldn't come today because the job he thought he'd finish yesterday was still incomplete & then I hung on until the Grocery Taxi guy came.

It's 11 am and I'm so sleepy (& still a bit shivery/sweaty) I'm walking into things. Going back to bed. Maybe I'll finish that dream about the Dover kittens (they looked something like Dexter Rex, but they were obviously intelligent, smug, alien beings intent on ruling the universe.)

*hugs* *sigh* I'm fighting it. I slept until I woke up starving & then fixed something quick. As soon as I wasn't hungry, I was queasy. I guess I'll have to let ehouse mostly go while I work to head this off (I'm determined to at least water the seeds I put in- I *think* a few might be sprouting already.)

I have Pixy Stix, they're mainly sugar & citric acid, which is Vitamin C.

Also I have echinacea pills & some echinacea green tea. Get up and FIGHT, immune system.

No, ascorbic acid is vitamin C. And it is usually in the form of Sodium Ascorbate that it is added to food.

Ah, thanks. Well, I do have a few vit. C chewable pills. I can take a couple extra of those.

But I'm still gonna eat the Pixy Stix. MMm... sugar and flavor, no harmful food value added.

If you're not eating food, then the sugar will help maintain you.

Also, something about it makes me less queasy, which is to the good. Am off to go turn the kettle on. :^)

Thank you. Anna is afraid of the scary kitten aliens.

I think their ears are so large so they can hear a can-opener from long distances. I'm sure they'd share their tuna in exchange for stories about your humans.

That is very useful.

Tuna? *runs to tell Avon*

Hope you feel better soon {hugs}

I like the idea of intelligent alien kittens, I do.

*hugs* Thanks! I'm gonna rest up and ignore eHouse's demands.

Look on the comment above this to see a couple of the intelligent alien kittens (which are not photoshopped pics. Really.)

Oh yeah, they're aliens all right :)

I think some cat-breeds are just a *trifle* exaggerated.

Devon Rex! (Dover?) I have to admit to a huge fondness for this breed!

The name 'Dover' was in my dream. I don't know that it has any significance. They looked like Devon Rex, except that they were telepathic and sneaky. I think they're gorgeous, but suspect you're likely to get more health problems with cats bred for such exaggerated features. Just from glancing at the comments on the flickr breed pool it seems that severe food allergies and skin/coat problems are not uncommon.

There's another genetic problem that breeders are trying to breed out of Devons and for the life of me I can't remember what - have a feeling it's cardiomyopathy.
Whatever it is, I still think they're gorgeous, but I love your description of them as alien cats.

It's a muscle weakness, but not the heart, it seems to start in the neck, throat, and esophagus, but isn't limited to that. I was googling for more pics and stumbled across a study where six closely related Devon rex cats afflicted with the congenital muscle disease were investigated over a three-year period. Four of them basically choked to death while eating, one had to be put down because it had grown too weak for any quality of life, and only the least affected of the 6 was still alive at the end of the three years.

It seems that you can spot it in kittens fairly young- when they use the litter box their heads will droop while they're peeing, some even winding up nose down in the litter.

If you like sciencey biology things, here's the article.

Hereditary Myopathy of Devon Rex Cats

And here's a Devon Rex cattery with great photos-- quite a few with the kittens with the family's baby, which are really AWWW.

That's it exactly! As soon as I read the opening paragraph and saw "breeders refer to it as spasticity"... that's how I've heard it referred to. I remember Richard Malik doing that study and asking for any breeders with affected cats to come forward.
What really shocked me in that article was reading one of the case studies; a male cat who was exhibiting signs at age 23 weeks, then sired two litters before his muscular control degenerated to the point he no longer could perform. That breeder ought to be shot! The very last thing you want to do is breed a substandard cat, particularly a stud as they can sire many more kittens than one queen can produce. Therefore your stud needs to be of the highest quality possible.
Off to look at happy kitten photos now, thanks for the link.

The kitten photos are lovely! There's even one with a kitten in an eggshell. It's the cutest ever.

They are so cute! How on earth do they manage to get such good photos? I can't get one kitten to stay still long enough for a good shot, let alone two kits together.

My guess involves one person being the photographer and at least one other person being the kitten wrangler, keeping them in the general area.
